Seals resting on the rocks at Kaikoura Seal Colony

One of the Easiest Seal Colonies to Visit from Kaikoura

Kaikoura Seal Colony is one of the best spots on the Kaikoura Coast Trail to observe New Zealand fur seals in the wild. Located just a short drive north of Kaikoura along State Highway 1, it's a popular stop for locals and visitors.
A well-maintained track and viewing platform lead you to an elevated viewpoint overlooking the rocks and shoreline where hundreds of seals gather to rest, play, and socialize.
Seals can be seen all year, and pups are born between August and October, making it an especially lively period. Always keep a respectful distance and follow signage to protect the animals.
