Mt New Zealand is about an hour’s drive from Kaikoura and is one of the country’s top ski fields. Known for its steep terrain and striking alpine scenery, it attracts expert skiers and boarders from around the world.
The mountain also offers runs for beginners and intermediates, plus lessons, equipment hire and ski passes sold on-site. Mt Lyford, nearby, is another destination used for training and freeride.
The ski season typically runs from June to October, depending on snow conditions. Kaikoura is an excellent base for a day trip to the snow.
